Hello! My name is Jane Lytvynenko, I’m an award-winning journalist covering Russia’s war on Ukraine, technology and disinformation mostly for The Wall Street Journal. My background is in open-source investigations, which I’ve taught to reporters and researchers in all corners of the globe.
I was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, but spent years living in Canada where I worked a Senior Technology Reporter for BuzzFeed News during Trump’s first administration and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. I then moved to Boston in 2021 for a fellowship with the Tech and Social Change Project at Harvard University’s Shorenstein Center. I guest-lectured in classes, helped develop case studies for the Media Manipulation Casebook and created a half-day training curriculum for covering disinformation in newsrooms.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, I first relocated to Warsaw and then back to Kyiv, where I’m still based. Covering the war has dominated my work for over three years. With The Wall Street Journal’s Visual Investigations team we dug into allegations of Russian war crimes and published a documentary into the notorious Wagner Group, the Kremlin’s secret army. My reporting for The Wall Street Journal’s Kyiv Bureau has taken me to front-line cities, presidential quarters and families irrevocably destroyed by Russian bombs. I continue to use OSINT in my reporting as well as teaching these skills in talks and workshops.
